Traditions We Love

This month we have talked a lot about traditions.  We talked about what children around the world do with their teeth when they fall out, and we have talked about our family traditions around the holidays.  We graphed our traditions to compare them and this week we partnered up to complete a Venn Diagram to find out our similarities and differences when it comes to Christmas traditions.  It was wonderful to hear about your fantastic and creative traditions.  The New Year is right around the corner and a tradition that I have is to set a goal for myself for the coming year.  Today I am going to ask the Crickets to blog about something they would like to accomplish in 2012.  I hope you all have wonderful and warm holidays and a fantastic 2012.

Crickets Care!

This month we will be talking a lot about our third core concept, Caring.  We have talked about how we can be caring here at school and at home.  Yesterday we had our all school meeting and our class shared our Hearts that Care project.  We have made colorful hearts to hand out at our school to people that we care about.  Each heart says "A Cricket Cares About You!"  It is always nice to know that people care about you.  We can also do things that show that we care about our planet.  For example in our classroom we try to recycle everything that we can.  I am asking the crickets to share some ways that they show that they care.

Ready to Hibernate?

This week we started writing and thinking about our weekly wonder.  The wonder questions are from a website called Wonderopolis and a link can be found on our class web page.  It is another way for us to learn and think about science during our very busy day.  This week the wonder was all about hibernation.  We compared migrating and hibernating and talked about how food supplies really effect what animals do in the winter in Vermont.  I asked the crickets which animal they thought hibernated the longest, and I asked them if they were getting ready to hibernate what would they do?  I know I would fill up on all of my favorite foods, find a soft feather bed, wear my favorite hoodie, cover up with my down comforters and snooze away.

Being Thankful

I am so thankful for my crickets.  We were talking about Thanksgiving today and made a list of things that we were thankful for.  The crickets made the most beautiful list and really understood the big picture.  Our class came up with this list.  We are thankful for our families, our home, our friends, having food, being old enough to help around the house, for having time for fun, for the earth, for clean air, for clean water, for our cars so that we can visit family that lives far away,  for our school and our teachers, for having enough food, for being able to hunt, and for bees which give us honey and pollinating plants.  Some of our friends were also thankful for God and being able to pray.  You should all be very proud of your crickets.  They are global thinkers.  We read the book The Night Before Thanksgiving and talked about what we would do if we invited a turkey to Thanksgiving instead of eating one.  I asked the crickets to anticipate what their favorite part of Thanksgiving will be.

Abenaki Indian Story Teller

We are in for a treat on Wednesday.  We will be able to listen to two story tellers in our gym.  They will be sharing stories about the Abenaki Indians.  I know that the crickets love to listen to stories and see performances, so this will be a fantastic experience.  I am asking the crickets to blog about what they liked best about the story tellers this morning.  Cricket families you should be so proud of your crickets they are working so hard everyday and they are getting smarter and smarter.  They amaze me every day!

Winter is on it's way

What a busy week it has been already!  Halloween has come and gone.  It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 44 days already!  When talking to my parents this weekend they told me that they had received 6 inches of snow and it didn't melt!  I guess it is true that winter is on it's way.  There are not too many things that I love about winter, but I do love big snowstorms.  It is so peaceful because everyone is at home watching the snow fall.  I asked my crickets what they were looking forward to this winter.

Beginning to Blog!

I am so excited to start blogging with my 2011-2012 cricket class!  A blog is a place where you can share your thoughts with anyone who has an internet device.  I asked my crickets for their first blog to write what their favorite thing about first grade is so far.  Here's to an exciting year!

Grand Finale

This will be our last blog of the 2010-2011 school year.  I think all of the crickets have done a fantastic job blogging this year.  I love to read each and every post!!  Today we read the book Hooray For Reading Day.  It tells the story of a little girl who has trouble reading in front of other people but has no trouble reading to her pet dog Wiggles.  I am wondering what books the crickets just loved this year.  Please tell me what book you would read to your pet......

It's almost here!!

As we head into the long Memorial Day Weekend and to the beginning of summer most of us are thinking about the things that we can't wait to do once the warm weather arrives.  I can't wait for fresh vegetables, campfires, and ice cream.  I asked the crickets what their summer hopes and dreams were......

Nothing up our sleeve....

We saw a fantastic magic show this morning!  Some of our very own crickets were able to be assistants!
If we fund raise enough  money next year the magician promised to come back to our school and make a teacher or principal disappear.  I am asking the crickets if they could choose who they would make disappear who would it be and why?

Beach day?

Today at Swanton Elementary we are celebrating Beach Day!  While the weather outside is frightful the crickets are all decked out in their summer duds.  We are all looking forward to the warm sunny weather ahead.  They celebrated in P.E. today by playing a fabulous tennis game!  I love to go to Alburg Sand Dunes in the summer and play in the water on my floaty.   What is your favorite thing to do at the beach?

Books vs. Computers

We read a terrific book today by Lane Smith.  It is titled It's A Book.  It is a very funny story about a donkey who does not understand what a book is or how to use it.  He wonders how do you scroll down, where is the mouse, do you need a password?  If you choose to read it to your children please note that you may need to edit the last word of the text!  (Your middle school child will love it!)  I asked the crickets if they would rather use books or computers to read stories, gather information, or learn new things, and WHY!

Spring is in the air

It has again been a long time since our last blog.  We are back and we are ready.  We have been talking about all of the ways we can tell that spring is in the air.  We read the book Mud by Mary Lyn Ray and have talked about the ways we have seen, smelled, tasted, felt, and heard spring arrive.  I asked the crickets to comment on how they know spring is here!!

We're Back!!!

Wow, it has been a long time since we have blogged.  With vacation and not being able to use the netbooks we may be a little rusty!  The Crickets have earned another feather for being respectful, responsible and caring throughout their school days.  It takes us 15 compliments to earn our feather for Swannie.  I asked the crickets how they would like to celebrate earning another feather.  We have already had a game day, a zumba day, a pj day, and a pj stuffed animal movie ice cream sundae day.   They have come a long way since the beginning of the year.  Bravo Crickets!!

Love is in the air

There has been a lot of talk in the Cricket room about what love is, the things that we love, and the people that we love.  Valentine's Day is right around the corner and we have made some beautiful things for friends and family.  We are working on making our first photostory using our Love is writing project.  This also fits in with our school wide expectation around being caring.  I asked the Crickets what would you like someone to do for you to show that they care for you?

Hooray, Hooray, it's 100th day!

It is hard to believe that it is the 100th day of school already.  I looked back at the pictures I had taken during the first few weeks of school and could not believe how much these crickets have grown.  They have gotten smarter every single day.  We have done many activities around the number 100 today and I wanted to know.. if you could have 100 of anything in the world, what would it be?

Snowflakes!

How are we like snowflakes?  This month has been very snowy and cold.  We have talked about snowflakes in our classroom and have seen many snowflakes falling outside our windows.  Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike?  We have spent time in our wonder center making snowflakes and they are all different from one another.  We used new vocabulary words to describe snowflakes:  Exclusive, Different, Unique, Exceptional, Special, Individual, Only, One-of-a-kind, and Extraordinary.  I asked the crickets to think about what makes them unique?

Favorite Words

The crickets have started a new collection.  We are collecting our favorite words.  These words are either fun to say, have a special meaning to us, or are words we love to use in our writing.  Our collection jar is quite full!  We will play with and explore the words in our jar on Fridays.  Some of my favorite words are:  Bubble- because it's fun to say, it reminds me of the lazy days of summer, and when I write the word the b's remind me of bubbles.    Mischievous- because it's fun to say, and it reminds me of my children when they were little and the little grins they would get on their faces when they were up to some mischief.  I asked the crickets what one of their favorite words was and why?  Check out the new link on our home page for a word of the day site to expand your cricket's vocabulary!

Thoughtful Thursday

What a wintery week it has been so far!  I hope you have all been safe in the snow.
This week the crickets and I have been talking about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he made our country see some changes that need to happen. We have talked how in our country the rules have not always been fair or equal to all people.  We have read the book The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson.  In this story two little girls who were not supposed to play together because of their skin color decide to be friends anyway.  This helps other children to overcome their fears.  We talked about how one person can make a difference.  I asked the crickets what they thought about how things used to be.

Happy New Year!

It is the beginning of a brand new year!  Welcome 2011.  Let's see what the crickets are looking forward to or would like to learn in 2011.
